Both Norwegian and SAS have direct flights from Oslo to Kirkenes.
The small town of Kirkenes is located in Northern Norway, near the Russian border and is considered the Barents region's capital. Winters in eastern Finnmark are snowy and cold, perfect for snowmobile and dog sledding under the Northern Lights.
The Northern Lights are nature's own fireworks. Northern Norway is one of the best places in the world to watch the Northern Lights. If we are to be honest, that is only partially true, as the lights can be just as visible from destinations outside of Norway. But few countries can rival the vast selection of activities, tours, restaurants and hotels which all play an important part in this arctic experience.
The lights come at night when the sky is dark. It’s like a celestial ballet of light dancing across the night sky, with a colour palette of green, pink or violet. Between late September and late March, it is dark between 6pm and 1am. This is your best chance of spotting the lights. In Kirkenes the best period for Northern Light is normally from the beginning of January to mid-March, but please note that it is never guaranteed that you get to see the Northern Lights.
After checking in at the hotel you will have some time on your own in Kirkenes before you are picked up at the hotel 17:45. Today King Crab Safari and hunting the Northern Lights by snowmobile is on the programme. First, we will take king crabs from the pots. While the crabs are being cooked, we start hunting the Northern Lights by snowmobile, in the Siberian Taiga forest in the Pasvik Valley. After the trip, we enjoy fresh king crabs and drink a glass of white wine. Coffee and tea will also be served.
